Gorgeous day here in New England, the Red Sox are leading the series and I am very content on this sunny Sunday. As I sat curled up with Joel Osteens new book, he was writing about discovering your destiny my mind started drifting off into my art work. I have been wanting to create a new postcard for a mailing and have been stuck on what the image should be-and as my mind wondered through some art I have recently created I got a flash of an idea and I was actually smart enough to get out from under my great-grandmothers quilt and sketch out the idea! In his book he made mention of someone who didn't believe they were working in the right job because "it came to easily" and that person didn't necessarily feel like they were making the difference in life that they should be.
This reminded me of my first year in college where I started out as a political science major. Of course I took an art class because I had been taking art classes all my life and that is just "what I did" but I didn't think art was serious enough or something-who knows what I thought! Within the year I realized that making art was so much more pleasurable than political science! Although I did get heavily involved in student government-eventually having that avenue scholarship my way through college I stuck with what I thought "came easy" my art major. It wasn't until much later that I realized that not all art comes easily but there is such a joy I get when the piece of art "works". I have also recently realized that some of my best art is does in a sublime state. When I am playing, sketching or even under a quick deadline. I guess that is what I liked about this verse in Romans "God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well." Part of what that means to me is putting myself in a place of joy and peace almost a relaxation mindset and then letting the art come out of that space. Ahhhh, this moment can feel like that little tickle of excitement that you get when you are about to do something really fun.
I sketched this image of a woman in an evening dress for a toile pattern that I created. I played with it-adding color to her gown and lips I think each design has it's place . I am excited today about sketching out my new postcard. It feels good to be in the "space".
