We went to see the Edward Hopper exhibit at The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I knew Tom would like Edward Hopper. His work is very American and it has a sophisticated simplicity. I remember in art classes disecting his compostions which was somewhat easy and informative.
Afterwards we had a glass of wine at the museum cafe. It was a perfect visit. I haven' t been to a museum in a while now that I think about it. I ending up at the terrific book store that the MFA has and picked up a book on fashion illustration which made my heart beat fast.(MAybe more than the exhibit) I think it was funny that before Hopper sold his first major painting at age 40 he had to make a living doing "commercial art". The exhibit added in parentheses (which he loathed). Did he illustrate or was he doing old world graphics? They naturally didn't show any of that work. Why add that, making it sound as if it commercial art were simply a loathsome thing to do. I am glad I am not caught in that thinking.
Again I wish the world of creativity wasn't so snotty. If you want to get into it, John Singer Sargent did not like doing portraits! Which is exactly what put him on the map as an artist.
Sometimes people are not happy doing the "journey" part of their life. I always figured I would participate at my young age and save my "art for arts sake" work for later in life when I am more inclined to be more of an observer. See, that is what is always so fabulous about art as a profession. It evolves with you. It is something you never have to "retire" from you just change your art as you change.
