I just got back from a quick trip to London. I spent my few waking hours scouring bookstores. I went to a used bookstore first, then a French bookstore and to Waterstones (a quaint chain, not quite a super sized as our chains). My conclusion is that I simply love reading and love looking at all the fun illustrated book covers (no photographed covers for me, please!) What I realized is that I AM in a business I am passionate about, lucky me!
As I stood in the bookstore I listened to children petitioning their parents to purchase the books for them. Little girls in round glasses a plaid uniform dresses and straw boaters perched on their heads, boy with pack backs and blazers with crests on them. The boy was making a hard sell to his mother over a thick paper back book that apparently contained a series of stories. “This is the greatest book ever, Mum!” He must have said that at least 30 times. “We are reading this at school; I can pick up right where we left off! It is the greatest book ever!” Naturally she relented (wouldn’t you?) and bought him the book. After stalking them a bit, I rushed over to the shelf to figure out what title deserved all the fuss. Alas! It was the last copy of the greatest book ever and it had slipped out the store under the arm of an excited 10 year old boy.
I did find a 1969 copy of one of Winnie’s books, it had some of E. H. Shepard's illustrations in it that I was not completely familiar with so I snatched it up. I also decided to give Luke art lessons this summer and this project book seemed liked the perfect guide for us…I am going attempt all the projects along with him, especially since some of them are 3-D, I suppose it will get me out of my 2 dimensional world!
