Last night was my first Human Anatomy for Artists class. It was great! The class is part of Rhode Island School of Design’s continuing Ed program. Our instructor is a full time illustration instructor at RSDI and he was terrific. He explained that we had most likely been using our “perception” to draw the figure but that perception only takes you so far and that we needed to learn conceptually. That once we did it would liberate us. Lordy, I need some liberation! Our first lesson was learning about boney landmarks. He explained that once we got a handle on these principals we will be able to draw the figure from our head accurately in any position. Hooray! This is exactly what the Dr. ordered. Did I forget what I learned in college? Did I even get these lessons? I was thinking this morning that when I was I high school I wanted to attend RSDI but I was in living southern Georgia, I had never even visited New England and it just was not a concept that my family or anyone in my high school could conceive. All these years later, I am living 15 minutes from RSDI and am getting instruction from very qualified instructors. It struck me that it may have taken awhile but God did answer the prayers of a young girl’s heart. Cool, huh?
